As a quinquagenarian, there are still lots of things to try for the first time.

Yesterday for a birthday celebration, I brought those expensive steaks from the case at the supermarket. You know the ones you pass by every time you go food shopping? Yeah, the $40/lb ones.

They were good and I’m glad I tried them but I probably wouldn’t buy them again.

Tell me what you did for the first time recently.

I started growing microgreens! It’s been amazing! A whole revelation!

I started growing a vegetable garden for the first time during the pandemic (in wine barrel planters and large containers in the little patch of weeds in front of my apartment building). I had been kind of neglecting it, in recent years, but when my relationship started capsizing, I cleaned it out and replanted it. When my relationship went full Titanic and sunk into the depths never to be heard from again, a couple months ago, I went all in on the garden, like it was fully my life preserver. It was seriously preserving my life.

Gardening outside wasn’t enough to keep me afloat. (Yes, that’s my metaphor and I’m sticking to it. ) So, I started learning how to grow microgreens indoors. It’s so simple and so easy and so delicious. It has been so much joy to wake up every day and see how much they’ve grown. They’re fully edible in a week! It’s totally wondrous to me. It’s been giving me life.

I went to a beginner ballet class.

I danced as a child and teenager, then after a long break, reconnected with it earlier this year. I've been doing commercial classes and loving it.

Performed in our show in July, which gave me such a buzz. I was inspired by the other dances too, so that propelled me to try beginner ballet and beginner contemporary!

I find these styles much harder. They're slower, more controlled and require more technical skill. But I'm determined to keep going and hoping I see an improvement soon!
